A jocular little side quest. Don’t know if I’m enamored enough with Bast as a character to really relish in the hijinks.

I loved 'The Name of the Wind' and enjoyed 'Wise Man's Fear', but I didn't really care for this one. The story is basically one day in the life of Bast. It's like an aside, but not a good one, like a chapter that got edited out of one of the original books and then published as a standalone. I was very disappointed. Now I understand all the angry fans. I'm not sure if I will read 'The Slow Regard of Silent Things'. It's supposedly similar to this book in that it is a day in the life of Auri, a different character from the book. My advice, if you really loved 'The Name of the Wind' you might want to skip this one and reread 'The Name of the Wind' instead. It will be a much more satisfying experience, especially if you are like me and have not read it more than once yet.

So this was a thing that I read. It wasn’t great, it wasn’t awful. As is typical for Rothfuss, the writing was beautiful and lyrical and layered. You always get the sense that there is a deeper meaning to everything. The first half of this novella was an absolute slog. Nothing happened and I was bored out of my mind. The second half picks up a bit and did tug on my heartstrings a tad. Still, this is NOT what fans want and didn’t really serve any purpose.

If you love Bast and want to see how he spends his time away from the inn, you might enjoy this. However, I think it’s one that could easily be skipped.

So, there’s the context to this obviously, the long take of an author struggling to fulfill a destiny and finish a trilogy.

However there’s also this. A beautiful, delicate drop of sunshine and brilliance refracted through a raindrop.

It’s short, it’s brilliant and it’s everything that makes Pat a genius
