I love it. I love historical fictions. I love this book way more than the first one, might because I focused on every chapters and really understood the story through the words.

It’s the thing with books, they make you feel something familiar even though you haven’t experience it at all.

I was pleased to be accepted to review this historical fiction ebook having read Heather Morris’ first book. This one is the sequel to The Tattooist of Auschwitz. The reader follows Cilka’s trying experiences in a gulag after WW2. She’s a strong character whom you root for throughout the harsh life she leads trying to survive her 15 year sentence. The author’s portrayal of life in the gulag was riveting and the characters were interesting and varied. I would definitely recommend this book if you are drawn to stories of the horrors of confinement but also stories of human kindness and endurance.

The will to survive at all costs, compounded by the a hint of PTSD for many of the characters, is how I read this, and it has resulted in my overdue comments. Cilka has survived the brutality of Auschwitz, but with the end of WWII, the Soviets decide she collaborated with the Nazis, and she is packed onto a train, another train, and sent to a gulag near the Arctic Circle. She is once again in survival mode, surrounded by people who want to use her, hate her, or could care less about her. Although the characters go about their reality on autopilot, even acts of kindness are subdued, this is basically nonfiction. The author has succeeded in intersecting traumatized characters with this emotionally drained reader.

What a great follow up to The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Fans of historical (non)fiction will find this book exciting, especially if you are interested in Jewish history or WWII.

Ultimately it is a story of bravery, survival, and love. Highly recommend, though the themes can be a bit bleak (the setting is WW II era Soviet Gulags). Overall, we’ll written (and performed, in Audio).
