While it is strange to read a story within the Avatar universe, The Rise of Kyoshi is an incredible book and is even better than I ever imagined. While there are definitely dark aspects, particularly some of the back stories for some of the characters, it is great to see more detail go into the world building while expanding the character of Kyoshi. The whole time you are rooting for her, even if her goals are questionable. While all the character motivations and interactions were very well written and interesting, the politics of the Earth Kingdom shown in all its terrible glory, I found that every time that bending was described, with the exception of an terrifyingly awesome scene at the end, I was actually drawn out of the story. I don't think it was the writers fault, in fact he probably did the best he could, but bending is such a visual thing within the show it is hard to portray it in words as each movement seems too slow if described in detail but too non-consequential if not focused on in detail. All of the original characters were unique and engaging, and I for one am very excited to read the second book in this duology.
