3.5 stars. Ngl I thought the writing, to me, read like a really involved fanfiction. There are lines like “Auntie Mui…appeared from one of the side hallways and bounced over to them, like a plum rolling down a bumpy hill.” If you weren’t gonna have a good simile you really should t be using them at all.
That being said - loved the expansion of the Avatar universe. I kind of disagree with some other reviews that this was the wrong medium because I felt like writing allowed the Avatar universe to be portrayed in a much more brutal manner. People actually use bending to kill each other in ways that the show could never do, and I think that alone allowed the creators to explore bending in a different way.
Kyoshi’s characterization is a little all over the place but I think they’re trying to establish where she obtains that sense of unyielding justice that she has when Aang meets her, which I do enjoy. She’s also a badass bisexual icon.
Despite the writing style, I liked where the story went, and I’m excited to read the next book!

SO much better than I was thinking it'd be! I was worried it'd be a meh YA book but it really does lean into more dark themes and action to make it feel more intense in the best ways, Kyoshi is my favorite Avatar character and this book is largely one of the reasons why.
I love everything about this book. The world it portrays and the characters within it are deep, wonderful and enchanting. I want to hug Kyoshi and Rangi so much.

This book is amazing. Full stop. As a huge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, I am so happy this book exists.
Kyoshi is just an ordinary Earth Kingdom citizen with poor bending skills and a hidden past. She knows the mystery and horror of her upbringing but to those around her, she is a meek servant in the household of the presumed avatar. When it turns out that she is actually the avatar, everything by changes.
I love that she was not the obvious choice at the beginning. Yun seemed so capable and was loveable as an avatar that it would have made sense. Kyoshi fumbles her way into this huge responsibility and does it spectacularly. I love her character and development. She comes into her strength so naturally. At first, she can only bend huge formations because she had no focus and really struggles to embrace her identity. When she begins to hone her craft with the help of Rangi and the Flying Opera Company, everything she stands for falls into place. It is magnificent. Kyoshi is brash and bold but is not without fear. She knows she has limits and tries to her best to over come them. She is not without flaws and foibles and I have a feeling she will be one of my favorite characters in the Avatar canon.
I am so glad they chose to focus on Avatar Kyoshi for these novels. I am so excited to read the next one to see where her story goes. As a fan of the series, I know how her story ends but I am so excited to see how it plays out. Seriously, if you are a fan of the shows, read this book. It is great.

4.5 - finally a prequel that is both super enjoyable and doesn’t feel unnecessary
