The Rise of Kyoshi

I would maybe give this 4 1/2 stars if I could - I don’t think I loved it quite as much as most books I rate this high, but it was a fantastic novel in its own right. I think I would have enjoyed the ebook or physical copy better than the audiobook because I found myself loosing track of who was who and what gang was called what, which made the story a bit hard to follow at times.

However, all those issues aside, it was a great story with a strong plot. Avatar Kyoshi is a super interesting character and far more different from Aang than I would have expected which I loved. I was worried I would be reading about the same character from the tv series but with a different name. Like the intro says, prequels have a huge responsibility to remain faithful to source material while still creating a compelling story. I felt like the creators did a fantastic job balancing this dilemma and they wrote a story that expands the known universe while still giving us a new and interesting story and characters.

I really enjoyed the more complex nature of the antagonists in this story and I felt like the author did a great job making them sympathetic and, unlike Firelord Sozin, not just manic fascist bloodthirsty dictators. I am excited to read the sequel and feel like there’s a lot that this story can do for the Avatar universe.

So much better than I expected! I’ve been sitting on this one for a while and I’m so glad I finally read it. I love that all the avatars have a different upbringing and story and drive. It’s great to see. And cool to see how they became them!! Kyoshi is a badass with a heart of steel ready to defend anyone in her family. Can’t wait to read the next one!

Eine würdige Ergänzung zur Serie

I actually really liked this. I was expecting something more childish??? Or at least for a lower age group. But it was actually very deep and complex with more adult topics. And of course it was amazing to hear Kyoshi's story! She always was a compelling character so it's wonderful to see her get some more content. I also loved Ranji!

Kyoshi is even more badass! I have always loved Kyoshi as a character and admired her no nonsense personality. However, getting to see how she got there, is an amazing journey. I loved learning about how she grew up and why she is the way she is. I love her relationships with her friends and how she comes to terms with her past and future missions. However, her journey is not over by the end of this book and I can't wait to see what happens in the next one!

kyoshi can literally step all over me oh my god

.

If you are a fan of ATLA, this is the book for you. It was awesome to see how Kyoshi became the Avatar. Can't wait to start the next one.

Well written and exciting story about one of the Avatars. Kyoshi has a very sad beginning as an orphaned servant girl and you feel yourself cheering for her as she learns she is actually more powerful and worthy of having a respectable life of her own. The story was captivating. The fight scenes were engaging. I can’t wait to read book two. Kyoshi is now possibly my second favorite avatar.
