The Rise of Kyoshi

This was everything I needed!

"The Rise of Kyoshi" is a YA read, yeah, but proved to be tremendously rich and stirring in its storytelling - so thank you F.C. Yee for your work, and thank you Michael Dante DiMartino for your stamp of approval!!

Honestly, the writing and plot development were SO ENGAGING. Parts were predictable, but other parts WERE CERTAINLY NOT! It leaned into the AtlA and LoK world that fans cherish, while it also expanded on its history and lore. I feel like Kyoshi's biopic could have run the risk of trailing down story arcs similar to those of Aang and Korra, but it’s completely Kyoshi’s own (no matter how painful). Both the Flying Opera Company crew and Kyoshi and Rangi's relationship now have a treasured place in my heart. Plus, the book incorporated much more gore and violence and death - which was a harrowing and mature (and more fun imo) change of pace.

I would recommend to any fan of the series and comics! And for those who haven't seen, I can assure you it was a riveting read with twists and plots that had me on the edge of my seat through the very end.

This story feels right at home in the Avatar universe. F.C. Yee has done a great job of incorporating the ATLA/LOK lore and giving us a story worthy of the legendary Kyoshi.

This novel tells the story of the female Avatar Kyoshi who also briefly shows up in The Last Airbender Series. It was entertaining, well written and a legitimate and fitting addition to the Avatarverse. (I'm also just hooked and want more Avatarverse so here we are.)

I won't give away too much, but the story starts in a time when the new, reborn Avatar cannot be found. After seven years, Yun is supposed to be the new avatar but something is off. Kyoshi is working on the Avatar Estate, so to speak, basically cleaning up after the avatar. But everything changes when they travel to the North Pole...

There's also flying bisons in it, more weird animals, a queer romance (YASSSSSS) & some decent bending. I like.

4 Stars because some things were predicable.
