Pretty much everyone who told me about this book said, it’s not what you think it is. And they were right. This is the story of the woman behind the Duchess Goldblatt Twitter account, how and why she came to create it, and what happened to her as it took off. Very interesting, and that’s all I’m going to say so you can have the same experience when you read it.

Also it made me jealous since she’s ended up being buddies with some of my favorite Twitter people AND LYLE LOVETT. We saw Lyle in concert with Bonnie Raitt at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh back in the 80s (or maybe early 90s?) and it was amazing. Kiss my ass, I bought a boat, I’m going out to sea.

“Not until people start seeing typos eating out of their garbage cans at night will they regret hunting proofreaders almost to extinction.”

“Wherever there’s organic matter, a water source, and darkness, reality will grow. Get after it with vinegar, baking soda, and dynamite.”

This book was not at all what I expected. Sure, it’s sprinkled with Duchess Goldblatt’s pithy and hilarious tweets like the two I shared above, but the meat of this story is about the woman behind Duchess Goldblatt (DG). DG is the best thing about Twitter and was the sole reason I waited so long to leave it behind. I used to hunt for her recent tweets, read them and dissolve into giggles, and seek out my husband to share with him, who would then look at me like I had twelve heads.

But the woman behind DG? I had no idea she was experiencing so much heartache and upheaval. She was going through a messy divorce and custody battle and it was affecting her in unexpected ways. DG was her way to spread goodness and light into the world, despite believing that she was the exact opposite of that. Luckily, Lyle Lovett knew how to set her straight. (I realize this is a crazy little blurb if you’re unfamiliar with DG – sorry!)

I could talk about DG for hours and hours, so I’ll stop here. But this is a great memoir about finding your footing after your world gets turned upside down, reckoning with old demons, and realizing that you are worthy and can love the world despite believing otherwise.

This surprised and delighted me. I truly loved it.

Part memoir about a younger sister dealing with her older brother’s mental illness and part social media pseudonym making cozy quips on Twitter, which ends up charming Lyle Lovett and several others. Good but certainly nothing I couldn’t have missed.

i felt touched by this book.

Duchess Goldblatt was the quirky, meandering memoir of an anonymous Twitter personality. I enjoyed the hopeful moments and encouragement the author gave her followers. DG is a community and this book kind of makes me want to rejoin Twitter just to follow her! The audio is the way to go, especially with her guest narrator!

Two very special older ladies recommended this book to me and I'm so glad I did.

I've never felt so seen in terms of dealing with depressing times than this. It's comforting, in a way, to know that there's a way forward, and new friends to make in life.
