My friend texted me, "I know you hate memoirs but..." And then later in the conversation I asked, "You want me to read a memoir about a fake person?!?!"
I am sure happy I did. This was really fun and FASCINATING. I loved the better version of herself the author created through Duchess. And if you like Lyle Lovett it is a must read. (I am not a regular Twitter user but I did check out the feed and wished she was on Facebook.)

What a delightful surprise of a book. I saw it listed as a contender for Goodreads' best humor writing for 2020 and, in need as I am of as many ha-ha moments as possible to endure this horrific year, bought it with absolutely no idea at all who Duchess Goldblatt was. But in the end the humor wasn't at all what sold me on this book. It was the deeply tender and compassionate way in which Anonymous tells her story and creates space for her followers to share theirs. (And also, obviously, the giant dollop of Lyle Lovett.)
What a wonderful world it would be if we all approached each other with the kindness, understanding, and belief in good intent that the Duchess fosters for her community of readers.

I discovered the Duchess quite by chance about two months ago. She is a delight to follow on Twitter. But this book is a sweet little chestnut. I read it in one sitting with a few interruptions. It was interesting to read a book by someone you are familiar with but who is totally and wholly unknown. You never find out who it is. But that doesn’t matter. There are so many touching bits and pieces about her journey from broken divorcee to a woman finding her voice and true center through being a fictional character on Twitter. It was such a pleasant read. I suggest it to anyone, whether they are on Twitter or not or follow her or not, because it is about finding not knowing.
This was such an unexpectedly delightful book. Highly, highly recommend!
Too tell-not-show and too self indulgent.
Hearing about how Goldblatt extends love to everyone around her is not the same as feeling it. Plus I just am not interested in the details of a friendship with lyle Lovett. Plus too meta - the last section of the book is about how she might sell this book? I sound more negative than I want to...I guess it’s because the first third of the book gave me so much hope that I would love the whole thing! So feel let down.

I started reading Becoming Duchess Goldblatt at 4:48am, an obscene hour when the rest of Texas was properly sleeping. Three cups of tea and a few hours later I finished.
What a delightful and sometimes sadly familiar journey on a Crooked Path. Use it as a balm for your weary soul.

"Good night, rascals, dreamboats, and hermits. Good night, crackpots and nutjobs and scoundrels. Good night, all librarians everywhere."
Where to start in trying to review 'Becoming Duchess Goldblatt'? I didn't really know what to expect from this book. To emphasize the humor, and there is plenty of it, is to risk gliding over the dark heart of pain at the core of this unusual memoir. Anonymous, the author, started writing this character to deal with the pain that came from her divorce and sense of being abandoned by friends and family. The Duchess is NOT the same person as Anonymous, but an alternate consciousness, living in Crooked Path, NY, ten minutes north of NYC, and ten minutes from the Canadian border. Before she knows it, the character she has created has developed a following on Twitter. Her tweets, one part gentle tenderness and two parts twisted humor, call out the need for community in our fractured society. The author makes a commitment to deal gently with those who follow her. I think what touched me most is how eager people are for kindness, tenderness, and connection.
I am not on Twitter so I was not aware of the Duchess's presence. Her wit and advice are almost enough to tempt me to tiptoe onto Twitter. Highly recommended.

I chose this book because it was listed as written by an anonymous writer. Then when it came up on GoodReads, the author was given as Duchess Goldblatt who is fictitious. It was quite interesting, but I was a little put off by the profanity in it. An anonymous memoir . . . hmmmmmm.
