"Despair, that's on you." - "Why would you be your own worst enemy?"

I really liked this book, but I'm struggling with how to review it.

The overarching theme seems to be "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Personally, I hate this saying. It feels dismissive, it's telling someone who's sad to "just be happy."

However, I do appreciate the underlying messages about resilience and picking yourself back up after a fall. It's just the way these messages are delivered that I didn't quite connect with.

Overall, I give it 2 stars for its delivery, but I'm keeping it at 4 stars because I found the messages themselves valuable.

Overall this book was a page turner. It has plenty of great information on how to approach obstacles in life and gives you steps on how to overcome them as well. A true book of Stoicism and its advice on focusing on one's own Locust of Control. It could have been written a little more simpler, but in the end, it does not greatly change the effectiveness of the book. I placed many bookmarks throughout and plan on re-reading when I'll need assistance with figuring out a way of a sticky situation. I realize as a Philosophy major I have a bias towards more philosophical books, but the advice in here is genuine and will easily help people conquer varying problems in their lives. It's written simple enough, and the subject matter is incredibly practical as well.

i feel like ryan holiday always lists reasons WHY stoicism is good but never HOW to practice stoicism in the moment for the average person

An inspiring yet swift kick in the butt is the best way to describe this book.

I didn't enjoy this book, though I had to finish it for school. I think Holiday tries to be inspiring in many ways that fall flat. If you follow this book to a T, you will always chase ambition and never happiness. I have a hard time believing that living like that is truly a triumph.
