This book was…okay. Not really a fan of a white woman from Iowa writing about voodoo and its (closed) practices (or including the spell at the end of the book that has ethical concerns). It also paints all meds that treat mental illness in a bad light, which was another big issue I had with this book. There’s enough negative association with mental health meds out there that this book didn’t need to add to. The characters also made some questionable decisions like going to question someone at their house alone who works with poison and then not only accepts an open container of water from them, but takes multiple sips from said container<\spoiler>.
It wasn’t an awful book and I didn’t hate it, but there were enough points that irked me to keep me from fully enjoying it. But it has kept me distracted during this flare. I don’t think I’d read more of this series and don’t see myself seeking out anything by this author in the future, but may not completely dismiss them either.
