I love this book. I laugh, I cry. All of it. It's such a great continuation of the Anne storyline. It was hard to give up all the old Avonlea characters, though.

This is probably my 6th time reading this book, and I did not find it to be an enjoyable experience. Where is Gilbert? Davy, Dora, Marilla, Rachel Lynde, they are practically erased from this book. Even Anne is completely in the background, although the book is mostly from her perspective. We get nothing other inner monologue. When she has conversations with friends, we mostly only get her agreeing with them, or passively listening. The main characters of this book are Captain Jim, Leslie, and Cornelia Bryant, all of whom are new to us in this book. LM Montgomery creates characters beautifully, and I grew to care about these new people. But I never got past my frustration that every other character, including Anne, melted into the background.

The further we get into the series, the more Anne feels like a supporting character instead of a main character. In the last few books, it seems that Anne is the sounding board to hear and relate other characters' stories. The plot is not about Anne, and we lose sight of her own life's journey while we learn about other characters who are unlikely to appear in the next installment.

.

I would like to see the focus return to Anne in the next book, but I'm not sure it will.

I read this series for the first time in the second grade. I’ve read it many times since then and loved it every time. I am very disappointed in those who say that Anne is acting out of character in being a wife. I think she is in character because as a child she wanted to get married and have children. Her overwhelming love is what makes her true calling motherhood. Anne has grown up that is true but she’s still Anne. The same Anne who got into such trouble as a child now has children of her own. She’s changed yes but we all do as we grow up. Anne wasn’t forced into this marriage it was a natural progression of time. Anne was in live with Gilbert since she was 11 even if she didn’t always know it. Marrying Roy would have been forced but not Gilbert.
