This starts out as a typical children's book that is trying to be different/non-conventional, and then about 2/3 of the way in it suddenly becomes very Lemony-Snicket-y.

An unfunny book with an unengaging premise. And then a man takes off his pants when a woman asks him not to and they're married. What happens to the bad mood? Who even knows.

Bloody delightful! Ummmm apart from the problematic consent issues

I don't like the art very much but I really like the story and the tone. This one reminded me of family favorite The Obstinate Pen.

Super-cute story about how a bad mood goes from person-to-person in a town. I loved the bit about how the bad mood eventually went all around the world, with the distinction you (the reader) had the bad mood too. The illustrations are beautiful. The colors are fantastic and the characters are memorable. Definitely a great book to read aloud.

Also - everything can be fixed with ice cream :)

Hands down, my new favorite picture book. This is funny and sweet, and is each one of us when we’re grumpy.

The premise of this is very cute, but the execution was a bit weird. I'm not sure why halfway through the story, it stopped being about the bad mood and instead turned into a love story. If the idea of never knowing what will or will not cause a bad mood had been expanded on then maybe it would have made more sense. As it is, it should have focused more on the bad mood, in my opinion.

Problematic AF. The stars are for the illustrations.

1) I generally get Snicket's humor, but he lost me at the whole solving a bad mood by bullying others bit. It just doesn't work.

2) AND THEN. The old white man demands that the WOC dry cleaner clean his pants and insists on standing around in his underwear. She says no. He still takes his pants off. Instead of getting angry, she smiles, rests her face in her hands, and gazes adoringly at him. Sorry not sorry for the spoiler alert.

This is not a review as an angry parent. This is a review by a disappointed reader and library professional. Coupled with his past awful behavior, I can't recommend Lemony Snicket any longer.

First off, this book just doesn't make any sense to me. People get in a better mood once something nasty happens? What?

But the real, glaring issue is that an incredibly rude man takes off his pants after a woman tells him not to and she somehow is won over by his underwear clad body and marries him? What??

Another picture book where people seem to gloss over the effed up message and just see the funny...except I don't see the funny. At least with XO, OX: A Love Story I could see what people liked about it. This pos? Not so much.
