Martin doesn’t know how to write anything happy, does he? It’s a pretty good vampire book. The first 100 pages are far, far better than anything that happens later. If you pick this one, I hope you like steamboats. I learned more backstory about life on a river boat than I did about the vampires. 3/5 stars
I don't often read in the "vampire" genre, but I love George RR Martin's work and when I saw this novel in the used bookstore in Seattle I decided to pick it up. I was not disappointed. Though it started out a tad slow it really picked up and had me well enveloped by book's end. George is an amazing world-builder and always pays strict attention to his setting, setting is almost its own character in his novels and really shapes the characters and their interactions - this is very clear here. I highly recommend this book if you like monsters, vampires, or just really well-written and intense stories. Though there is obviously a lot of blood (and a lot of swearing) it is not horror, and content is more on the tame side for the most part. I really really enjoyed this book, it should definitely be more popular!
GRRM is a master of mood, premise, and the occult, but his vamp mythology pales in comparison to his dragon lore.

Parts of it were terribly evocative but the world building was more interesting than the characters. Some fascinating concepts around vampirism and its myths. Ultimately the pick n mix mortality and cardboard cut out women let down a great concept.
