I really loved this book and really could relate to the pressures and struggles of Maddie. The only thing I think lacked was the lack of true authentic Ghanaian representation, for example if Maddie’s parents are first gen Ghanaians surely they would speak more in Twi rather an English? There were a lot of parts that really captured the cultural pressures and hyper independence instilled in children, especially daughters, but I just feel a lot more could have been expressed and shown in the book.

Despite this, the book really portrayed grief beautifully and realistically and it was lovely to see Maddie be supported by her peers and her family. The characters were so real and there was great depth in the characters and the relationships.

This was a delightful book. I loved the main character, Maame! Her relationship with her family, especially her Mum, was complicated.

Maame follows Maddie, an English-Ghanaian woman, who is coming of age in her mid-twenties. She is a dutiful daughter, sister, employee, friend, and caretaker. In some ways, the weight on Maddie’s shoulders (both to her family and career) should have hardened her more. But she is so amusingly naive about a lot of topics (which she constantly has to google), such as sex, drugs, sexuality, racism, and independence. She has remained kind and curious through life circumstances, though lost in terms of her own identity and womanhood. What does it mean to be a woman or maame? And what definitions of womanhood are imposed on us, whether through society or culture?

I found Maddie and her family dynamic to be extremely relatable. I did not want her to go through any trials or tribulations!!!! But unfortunately, that’s a part of life. The writing style is so welcoming and fun. I was drawn in pretty immediately. I think this is a moving, at times funny, and timely debut! I would definitely recommend and I look forward to what Jessica George writes next! Maddie will stay with me for time to come.

At times this book felt all over the place, and I got tired of the incessant googling but overall I found this and the characters quite compelling and enjoyed Maddie’s journey and development over time.

The narrator was amazing!

Good story. Enlightening to learn about another culture. Rather basic in mundane details but also great to see growth of the main character. Kind of a 20-something coming of age tale. Glad I read.
