I found this book very helpful and informative as well as easy to navigate. Though my Japanese friends say that sometimes the grammar/word choice is a little weird, I think it provides a solid foundation for beginners and also forces you to learn hiragana and kanji rather than rely on romanji which is essential to learning Japanese.
