I was extremely excited for this book when I read the summary and saw the beautiful cover! It didn’t disappoint, but man did it took a while for things to speed up.

This gothic thriller is a slow burn filled with beautiful, detailed descriptions and suspense galore. The plot follows Vera, daughter of serial killer Francis Crowder. Vera’s relationship with her parents is complicated, but her relationship with the Crowder House is even more so.

If you pick up this book, get ready for some thrilling descriptions, tense situations, and a plot twist that’s unique & unexpected.

So, I picked this book up because a coworker of mine told me it kept her up at night. And I like to try to push myself to read scary things, especially during the spooky season, because I love a good Gothic atmosphere, but am way too easily scared to be able to enjoy a good amount of Gothic literature.

This book surprised me. A lot. It doesn't feel so much like a horror book as it feels like a story of someone coming home to their best friend. The humans in this book were more monstrous than the actual monster! And I actually really really like that.

It was very slow and tedious at the beginning though. I had a hard time slogging through the first half of the book. But when the ball finally got rolling, I couldn't put it down anymore!

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this book since the abstract was released, and boy did it deliver. Sarah Gailey has a way of communicating emotion, atmosphere, and history that is unparalleled. Their characters are complex, and they have a wonderful gift for exploring internal life through the fantastical. Just Like Home offers a moving, disturbing, cathartic analysis of love, family, morality, abuse, and the things that shape us. This is a work of unflinching, raw vulnerability, and if you can handle it then I would highly recommend.
