This was disappointing. I might be giving up on Tana French for good at this point. None of this book made sense or followed any kind of logic. I mean why is old dude beating everyone up with sticks? And we’re just…OKAY with this? It’s weird, not immersive at all, and so unbelievable that it’s beyond enjoyable.

Definitely different plot-wise from her other books. This one’s less about the “mystery” and more about character development (human nature, building and tending to relationships, trusting or fighting your instincts) and the setting (a small town where you can’t expect traditional ‘rules’ or customs), but Tana French never disappoints! Her writing draws you in; her stories are a slow burn but I never find myself getting bored or impatient. I just enjoy the ride. Love, love, love!
I enjoyed this book, but it didn't change my life. The main characters actually had a lot of back story, so you would think they'd have a lot of depth, but somehow that connection wasn't really made. It seemed that Mart knew everything and had very little backstory. He seemed like he was included to just get us from point A to point B when the author wasn't really sure how to connect the dots.
I loved the setting of rural Ireland and while I do want to visit and maybe run away to there, it would have been nice if French explained, beyond the fact that Cal was weary in his bones and his soul, why he picked up and moved to rural Ireland. Its a great big world. Rural can be found in the US. And on any continent except Antarctica. The other characters in the book assume Cal is hiding something and so do I. The book is over and I still feel like he lied to me about why he moved to Ireland.
I loved the imagery, the scenery was described well enough that I could truly picture it and I felt like I was there so many times.
I enjoy watching Cal grow. Yes, even though he is retired, he still grew throughout this story and solving this mystery. And the 13-yr old boy, who adopts Cal, didn't seem to grow. A geriatric coming of age story?
It was a slow slow slow slow build. The majority of the book was build, which is fine! But you have to give me something worth my time, and the climax was a slow climax that we all saw coming. And then everyone gets closer and it just ends.
I just got the feeling that while the story was sweet, so much is still missing. What happens with Helena. What's the purpose of a lot of the characters. How does Cal's daughter or ex wife feel about things? What happens to Shiela?
I'm not sad that I read the book, but I can't say I'd recommend it.
