The characters, the prose, the setting -- French weaves an eerie, encapsulating tale that is warm when you least expect it. What I love about French's novels is that the suspense is so good, so gripping, but the characters are who you really love in the end. You start by longing to know whodunit, and you reach the end wanting to know how your beloved main character spends his Saturday afternoon, and if, after it all, he is happy and okay.
