I don’t want to call this slow paced. It meandered and took its time. Reading it forced me to savor and enjoy the characters and the setting instead of galloping through like I usually do with Tana French’s work. French forces the reader to grapple with questions of morality and what justice looks like. I’ll admit I struggled with the choices Cal made and I had to sit and turn those choices over in my head for awhile. The more I think about it, the more I love this book.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Cal and Trey, and the way the author writes. But it felt like a slooow burn for a somewhat dissatisfying ending.

Yet another book by Tana French in which she slowly pulls back the layers to expose the truth beneath. In this one, Cal, a retired Chicago detective, moves to rural Ireland in search of a new and simpler life. As he begins to restore his ruined farmhouse, he gets to know the locals and stumbles across the mystery of a missing teenager. He slowly gets drawn in despite resisting and unpicks the secrets of a close knit community. These books are not pacy but I still find them page turners,. Thoroughly enjoyed.,

Audiobook

I always love Tana French's deep, rich characters ... her detailed descriptions of scenery ... her story telling! To me, she's like Stephen King for the mystery genre.

This story was all of the above. I also really enjoyed the narration.

Had I been reading this book, I may have become bored because it does seem to drag in places. However, the drag is what enriches her books for me.

This book felt very true to life. I really enjoyed Cal and Trey's relationship.
Honestly though, I was more surprised by the reveal that Trey was a girl than by what actually happened to his brother, that part felt a bit underwhelming. Still, I didn’t expect his brother to be dead.
Overall, it’s a good book and has a slice-of-life feel, especially with how calm and peaceful the beginning was.
