Another entertaining story set in a very small town in Ireland

If you prefer Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad books to The Witch Elm, this might not be your cuppa. But if you don't mind slow pacing and in-depth exploration of life in a rural Irish town from the POV of an outsider with a secret, this is a very compelling read. I don't think our protagonist sounded particularly American, let alone Chicagoan, but it wasn't so bad that it took me out of the story. The conflict and drama was universal and well explored.

The Searcher (Cal Hooper #1)
By Tana French, narrated by Roger Clark

I've been meaning to read Tana French's work for years so when one of my libraries let me know that The Searcher audiobook was a 🍀"skip the line" option for me I grabbed it. Roger Clark narrates and he has a deep, rough voice and I wondered how I'd like his narration of women/kids' voices. His narration worked really well for me and I look forward to hearing him narrate more books.

Retired detective Cal Hooper really moved away from it all (he thinks) when he left Chicago where he lived and worked and bought a run down cottage in rural Ireland. Doing so was a great way to get away from city life although the tiny village his property is near is no quiet, peaceful little place once Cal sees what is under the surface. In fact, Cal ends up helping to rile up this little place in ways he'd never imagined when he came here to live the quiet life.

The instigator of getting Cal to start poking into the business of others is a kid named Trey, whose nineteen year old brother has gone missing. Cal tries to put Trey off but it's impossible and Trey knows that a retired detective is just the man for finding a missing brother. It doesn't take too many questions before Cal can tell that his interference in local happenings is not going to be tolerated. And when Cal pushes harder, violence is the answer.

In fact, this quiet place actually has a lot of violence. These good old boys in this area aren't so good after all. There are codes and rules that won't be broken here without one or more people paying. Lessons are taught, grudges are acted upon, this place is very dangerous unless you know how to tow the line and you may not even know there is a line if you are a newcomer like Cal. But Trey wants Cal to do the impossible so Cal keeps pushing and prodding. This story is brutal, the violence made me mad and there is a feeling of helplessness to stop it because it won't be stopped. I have the next book in this series (maybe there will even be a third one someday?) on hold and look forward to seeing what trouble Cal can get into in the future.

A pretty slow burn that lulls you into security with its documentation of small-town routines. Pieces fall into place just regularly enough to keep the plot moving. The characters are flawed and interesting, and allow to the mystery to unravel in a way that feels organic and true to life.
