Overall, this was a fun nostalgic read. Some of the 2007 attitudes made me cringe, but for the most part the references took me back to my college days and gave me a laugh.

However, one of the main love stories totally gave me the ick. I'm fine with age gap romance, but not when one of them is a minor. So many of my notes were followed by 🤢.

The end gave me some hope that that relationship is hopefully on hold, at least through book 2. Also, I have to give props to one twist towards the end I did not see coming.

Amazing. Gripping. Love. Loss. In love with Rose.

My... eighth (?) time reading this series.

This series is up there with the Harry Potter books for me. They never get old, and as soon as I finish them, I can't wait to re-read them again.

With that social angst that I'm pretty sure all teenagers can understand and sexual tension that makes Twilight look like a children's book, this series is filled with sassy, witty, sarcastic characters and is sure to make our day-to-day lives seem incredibly boring.

Get comfortable, you won't be moving for a while once you turn the page and start reading "I felt her fear before I heard her screams..."

Vampire Academy: More Than Just a Blood-Sucking Vampire Story?

At the ripe old age of 12 in 2009, I was enthralled by this book and the rest of the series. Even now, 14 years later, I have to say I'm still just as enthralled but even more so than what my freshly teenaged brain could fully comprehend at the time. Just before the 2010s, vampires were all the rage, as I'm sure we're all very familiar with, filled with heart-pounding romance that left thousands of us thirsty for a mega-hot vampire boyfriend. However, Richelle Mead took the idea of a vampire story and gave her readers something more. Throughout VA, she dug deep into intense themes of mental health, political issues, taboo topics, and social reform that make the story more than just another stereotypical teen vampire novel. The matters of the Moroi and Dhampir world--both adolescent and political--are strikingly comparable to the real world, which allows VA readers to relate and sympathize with them as they read Rose and Lissa's story. I think it's an incredible facet any writer employs in their work.

I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion, but I didn't enjoyed this first book at all. I've been trying to read this little guy for about six months and nothing, NOTHING made me want to pick up this book back again, that made me read about 30+ books before I've forced myself to finish this one.

I know this series is quite popular, but I wasn't able to deal with it at all, maybe it's because I have no patience what so ever to vampire books ever since I've read Twilight, but I dunno... The only thing that I'm sure is that I'm not going to go on with this series at all. I did liked a few parts and truly agree that Rose Hathaway is a badass female character, but it didn't make me want to go on just because of her.

Why did no one tell me Rose would be such a baddie? Bella from Twilight could never.

“The greatest and most powerful revolutions often start very quietly, hidden in the shadows.”

This was a pleasant sort of surprise. Vampire Academy was not at all what I expected, and I’m certainly glad for it! While a *cough* certain series might have tainted vampire stories for me, this one might have fixed a bit of that.

Rose Hathway is a guardian, tasked with protecting her best friend Lissa who happens to be a mortal vampire. The two girls attend a vampire academy which is filled to the brim with good vampires and their protectors. The school is meant to train its members to defend themselves against immortal vampires who seek to wipe out and turn everyone who isn’t already one of them. What the academy doesn’t know is that Rose and Lissa have got more than a few secrets between them--secrets that could change lives forever.

The thing I loved most about this story was Rose. She was such a refreshing protagonist to follow! I loved her unapologetic attitude, and her complete willingness to speak her mind at all times. She really drew me into the story and created a lot of intrigue through witty dialogue.

“When I saw you fall..."
"You thought, 'Wow, she's a loser.”

While I really enjoyed a lot of the characters, I found Richelle Mead’s writing was nothing special. It was good enough to keep me entertained all the way through, though it didn’t stand out from many other books.

The plot never really took on a clear direction in this story. There were a lot of little things going on that didn’t amount to anything until the very end. I wish there was a slightly more concise path to the way things unfolded, as several events didn’t seem important until the last chapter or so. Richelle Mead does do a really good job explaining the world and rules of magic, though,

All of this being said, I still had a really fun time with this book. It was relatively light and quick paced with a cast of interesting characters to follow along the way. I might just have to continue on with the series!
