I really enjoyed this interpretation! It brought the scenery and characters to life in a relatable way while also keeping the cadence and kennings reminiscent of the original poem.

Beowulf is a classic for a reason, and this translation is absolutely incredible. I admire the honesty of a translation that places itself in the translator’s context, instead of relying on antiquated language to make it seem like a translation is the exact meaning of the text, and not an interpretation by the translator. This one flows well and is a joy to both read and listen to on the audiobook (I’ve listened to it at least three times now, and read it at least four since it came out; needless to say I love Beowulf). Bro is such a strong and decisive choice for a translation of “Hwaet!”, the first word of the original text. The translator’s note at the beginning is also well worth a read, and a fascinating look at the deliberate choices that went into the end product. I really really really LOVE this one. Every time I finish it again I annoy my spouse and/or group chats to reverently repeat “He rode hard! He stayed thirsty! He was the man! He was the man.”

WHY DID I LIKE THIS SO MUCH?
Normally, I loathe reading books for school. Of course, I have fun in English class a. because I like reading in general and b. because if you have to read something it might as well be enjoyable. Let me repeat myself, I RARELY genuinely like a book that I read for school. Before I read Beowulf? I thought I would hate it. I have never gotten into the *medieval fantasy* genre, although I did like [b:The Fellowship of the Ring|34|The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1)|J.R.R. Tolkien|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1298411339l/34._SX50_.jpg|3204327]. Even so, I didn't finish the rest of the LOTR series (It's on my list, I will read them eventually!) so the fact that I ACTUALLY LIKED Beowulf was quite interesting.
Let me tell you why I liked this so much.
1. It's not that long

3. BEOWULF JUST RIPS GRENDEL'S ARM FROM HIS SOCKET I FLIPPED OMG
4. THE FACT THAT EVERYONE THINKS BEOWULF IS DEAD AND THEN HE COMES UP FROM THE WATER DEN THING WITH GRENDEL'S FREAKING HeAd!?!?!?! AAAAAAH
5. It's not dreadfully boring I was expecting something dreadfully boring!!!!
I read the Seamus Heaney translation, which was so beautiful and easy to read. Since this book was written so long ago, I thought that it would take me a lot of effort and time to read it. The contrary happened to be true! The only thing I didn't like about it is that there were sentences to the right of the translation summarizing what was going to happen next, so I didn't get to find out for myself. This will be helpful when I go back through the book to write my study guide for school, but I wanted to find out what happened to Beowulf myself. I do know that this book has been out for hundreds of years, but still! Spoiling isn't cool, no matter when the book came out!
I am PLEASENTLY SUPRISED! 4/5 stars!
