No. Just no. I read dark stuff, but the way this is done makes me uncomfortable.

In the beginning of the book, we meet Indiana. She is twelve years old and loves her parents, but there is a secret that is tearing her up inside. She finally gets the courage to tell her mom the secret, but both of her parents die in a car accident before the secret is shared. Unsurprisingly, she is devastated, and she receives comfort from her best friend Maddox. While she wishes she could stay with Maddox forever, she gets put into foster care which seems better than being left in the care of her brother. However, that situation becomes a living nightmare just a few short months after arriving and she spends five years locked in a basement before she is relocated to her hometown. She is fostered by the Mr. and Mrs. Astor; they have a daughter, Tinsley, who bullies Indiana every chance she gets and a son, Presley, who harasses Indiana every chance he gets. Neither home nor school is pleasant for Indiana, but it does improve when she reunites with Maddox. Not all is smooth sailing though and Indiana has to adapt and learn how to trust again after everyone in her life has consistently failed her.
I really enjoyed this book. I will admit that I was reading this book a couple years ago and for whatever reason, I was not a fan. I got halfway through it and stopped. I decided to try again and I am not sure why I stopped the first time because it was a very good book. There are a lot of delicate topics/situations that are included in this book, and it’s done in a very respectful way. I cannot say with any certainty whether it is accurate to the real-life scenarios, but it feels sincere to the problems she is going through. I love the way the relationships are developing because its kind of like three steps forward, two steps back. I know that is not the typical phrase, but there is some forward progress which tends to happen in real relationships. You win some and you lose some, but you are building your way toward something, even if you don’t what that something is... 4 of 5 stars

Man there is so much to unpack with this book. Indiana has really been through it. I cried, was angry, and just so frustrated for her. How no one could see her and how much she was suffering really pissed me off. But it's a reality for so many, including myself. And the cruelty she is facing with the kids in school is disgusting. I know kids are actually like that but I hope they eat their words. India is so strong for going through everything and still trying to smile and be successful. I hope she can survive and come out on top. Definitely a hard read
