I read this because I know it helps to set up House of M, not because I've followed the Avengers (I remember reading the arc when Wanda's kids turn out to be versions of her hex power that exist only when she's thinking about them, but not much more than that). I know basic information about them (like Pym and Janet splitting up after he hit her, Tony's history of alcoholism), but not much more than that. I'm sure this would have packed a greater emotional punch if I did have more background.

I'm not a fan of the explanation of the events of this book
Spoiler (Wanda-is-an-inherently-unstable-woman-who-can't-cope,-so-murders-everyone). I found Dr. Strange's dismissal of Wanda as someone who was born with magical power, as opposed to having "earned" them, as condescending.

The team dynamics were strange to me, though, again, this may be due to my unfamiliarity with the books. There seems to be a lot of freaking out by some of the female characters (particularly Janet) during the initial events of the book, which are terrible, yes, but these are experienced Avengers. The reaction feels a bit driven by stereotypes, as the men don't react in the same way. Later on, while there's a break in the action, Capt. America, Hawkeye, Falcon, Iron Man, and whatever-Pym-is-calling-himself-these-days, stand around and try to figure out what's going on. Well, the first four are, and then Pym starts yelling at Iron Man for what happened at the UN earlier that day. Yeah, that's important, but it feels like a digression.
SpoilerYes, it's eventually revealed that Wanda was behind the episode, but there's no reason for any of them, including Pym, to make the connection at that time.
Instead, Pym yelling at Tony about apparently being drunk earlier in the day, when they're trying to figure out why one Avenger is dead, another in custody, and several in the hospital, feels petty.

I liked it but with never reading previous Avengers comics I was often confused at references and characters (who was who).

Ugh. The comic itself feels more disassembled than the Avengers. Sad that it’s the set-up for the amazing House of M.

great build up, disappointing pay off. This arc starts off with a bang. We see multiple avengers die in some pretty brutal ways. However, the reasoning doesn't quite add up... The problem I often have with the magic system in Marvel is how undefined it tends to be. There aren't any real pros and cons to being and MCU magic user. You can pretty much do whatever you want. Once it's revealed Wanda betrayed everyone Strange says she has to stop trying to conjure her children because she hurting people and herself. We see the consequences of her magic on others but not herself. They claim she's mad but we don't see enough of her in these issues to say she's gone crazy. Narratively, we see a woman who is being gaslit to believe she never had children, she has no idea what reality is, and she never earned her powers. Yeah, I would commit some crimes too. The other characters are fun to read. Clint and Tony (as always) have maximum sass levels on at all times (their real superpowers). She Hulk and Carol Danvers are brilliantly written (though their butts are the focal point of the story far too often...). I really enjoyed the story until the midpoint and climax tried way too hard to convince me that Wanda was in the wrong even though the Avengers clearly drove her to this. The way most of them talk about her... The misogyny alone had me siding with Wanda. Doctor Strange literally says she has "the delicate mindset of a woman"... My guy, you broke your fingers and got sad when the girl you treated like crap chose another dude. who's got the delicate mindset? It ain't Wanda.
I rest my case, your honor.
Otherwise, it's heartbreaking to see Wanda try to salvage her family and come to terms with what the Avengers willingly let happen to her. ( and there isn't any real evidence in this arc that her kids are harming the universe. They just decide her kids are bad based on some mansplaining from Dr Strange.) The Avenger's break up and the arc ends there. It's a heartfelt scene where each surviving member recounts their favorite avengers moment.
It's worth a read if you're like me and wanted to dive into the inspiration for the Multiverse of Madness movie but it's a pretty average story.

While this was a beautifully illustrated comic, the story was rather lacking. The only note worthy moment was Ant Man being killed which happens right in the beginning. Obviously you have to read this before you start this new chapter in the Avengers Disassembled series, let's hope it gets better.
