The premise grabbed me immediately. I was in a book store with a friend and I read the blurb and my heart sank, and I knew I had to get this book.
I enjoyed it. The writing is straightforward and plain spoken, and there are a lot of high emotional stakes. However, I found the emotional impact was undercut by how much the book told me what to think.
Let me explain. A particular issue I have with certain writing styles is when books plainly state what the moral is or what message I should be receiving. I’d rather a book lays out the emotions of the characters and the situation, and lets me draw my own inferences and conclusions from it.
Many people find this style to be enjoyable, perhaps because it’s very accessible. The Alchemist and The Midnight Library are two such books, and clearly they’re very popular. Myself, I couldn’t stand these books.
If you like the character’s moral philosophies to be clearly written out for you, this book is for you. If you’re more like me, and don’t enjoy books that state a clear message, I still think this is a worthwhile read, but you should be aware that the book will spoonfeed you.

This was such a lovely book

This was okay. A very quick read. Nothing earth-shattering to make it a must read. The doppelganger as the devil was an interesting concept, explained even more toward the end- a nugget that stood out to me for its uniqueness and nudge toward the idea of the road not taken. The rest of the book was just okay, somewhat repetitive and a little bit whiny. An interesting exercise in learning what matters in life, and how much we humans have constructed meaning and importance to "stuff".
