I honestly don't know how to rate this book...it's a slow start, but then it got crazy. And I don't know how I feel about it, other than I had to keep reading and know what, how, why...so, I guess it made an impact so here we are.

There was something almost remarkable here and it is still very much worth reading, but it missed the mark by just a bit. One of my biggest gripes is that the injuries the group of characters sustain are extreme, but brushed off like minor scratches when it is convenient to do so. There was major injury piled one on top of another, but they never caught up to the group. There were more than a few deus ex machina moments as well, involving the same character getting saved at the last minute twice. If the severity of the injuries was more grounded it would have helped make me feel for the characters, what they were going through, and question whether they would survive or not.
As an aside, I couldn't help but think of Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit and Friends and that was amusing to me - in a good way it helped with the mood of the book.

4.5 stars. I couldn't quite get into this book at first, but I am so glad I stuck with it. Beautifully written story. Dark and heart-wrenching.
