I could not connect with this book, even though I really wanted to.
Interesting premise, but this really would have benefited from a limited omniscient narrative voice.
If you loved the Redwall series as a kid, and want to get your world absolutely rocked, this is the book for you.
“There’s beauty in the unknown, but there’s also beauty in truth,” she answered. “I guess some of us like to believe … and some of us just have to know
The great wide open beyond the hedge is far crueler than I ever thought it could be.”
There are no solutions in this life, Eamon. There are only moments in the sun … and moments in the shade … and the trick of it all is to understand where you’re standing before it’s too late to call it home.

Wow.
My words are failing me as I come to review this harrowing book.
In my humble opinion, this is a story of how vengeance serves nothing and you simply lose yourself along the way. Generational trauma was abound, as characters paid the price for the sins of those long dead.
This book has honestly just left me feeling raw and contemplative about life and our choices.

This was a surprising read. I bought it on a whim because I (accidentally) followed the author on Instagram and found out he was an author so thought I'd try his book. And it was worth it. Imagine Wind in the Willows meets Stephen King.
It's an insightful book, very well written (I learnt a new word or two), thought provoking and amusing at the same time as telling a captivating tale (I read much longer than my usual 20 pages before going to sleep), and with interesting characters that had depth and developed as the story went on. The characters rather than (what they could have easily been) one-dimensional turned out to be multi-layered with interesting back stories that unfolded as the tale went on. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and I liked that sometimes they were sympathetic and at other times you either didn't know what to think of them or thought them despicable until your turned the page and another part of their mystery unfolded and your view of them changed again.
The ending - often a sticking point with me - was fair and satisfying and just.
I can't wait for the author's next book. If it's anything as good as this, it'll be a must-read for me.

I read this because the author's social media posts are GOLDEN, so I thought I should give his full length novel a chance as well.
The story speaks to the book lovers, to those of us who have a heart book that has gotten us through difficulties, taught us how to be better people, or just was the exact right book for us at the exact right time. And then….what if you had the chance to see the source inspiration…. And then everything turned into a terrible horror movie???
The adventure is great, the characters are funny and endearing, the setup is well done, the reveals are a little slow but not too bad…. But the whole thing turns into a violent horror thriller that I wasn’t quite prepared for, hence the less than 5 stars. I like the writing and the creativity, but I don't love the major violence.
