It turns out cute characters from a cherished children’s story are real and they want revenge.

The premise was soooo good - the execution was not.

The amount of words/unnecessary details that were crammed onto every single page was mind numbing. I would start reading then would lose stream mid way and then skip to the next paragraph.

Knock off about 50-100 pages and I think you’d have a solid read.

this author made too much money as a neuroscientist and so now hes decided to follo his Heart and become a Writer who can self publish and put it on amazon. i was drawn in (deceived), by the cover art no less. rooki mistake. i had it coming honestli. clearli he could afford a good book designer/artist too.
anyway
i advise the author to just buy a car or golf or have an affair like everi other rich neuroscientist and then go back to work and cure a rare congenital brain cancer. like pls gro up.

What an incredible novel! If the plot didn't involve twisted animals hunting humans for sport you would think this was required reading and a storied piece of American literature. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next and was captivated by the authors ability to make u feel like you are actually there watching it all unfold. I don't write many reviews but felt compelled to here. Excited to read his next nook

My favorite part was how original the idea was. It felt personal since we all have a favorite book that we probably have made very important in our lives and to meet the characters from that book is a really fun idea. I liked that it moved quickly after the introduction and the atmosphere was well done. I recently learned about eco criticism as a literary theory which added to my enjoyment of this book.

This book was fantastic, but it wasn’t surprising in the least. No plot twists that weren’t obvious extremely early in the book, but that doesn’t matter.

I saw one review that said it had too much “unnecessary flowery language,” but that’s exactly what I loved most about it. All this horrible stuff is happening, but it’s written in such an oddly poetic way, I couldn’t stop reading it. I made countless highlights simply because I loved how a certain sentence was worded, and I’m actually tempted to get the audiobook to see how it would sound read aloud. Not to mention that a lot of the banter was downright funny.

Overall, it was a great book, and the ONLY reason I didn’t rate it higher is because everything that happened WAS so expected. If the story had been more surprising or the twist been less alluded so that it would’ve been truly shocking, it would’ve scored higher, but it was still a fantastically flowery massacre.

Whew! Much darker than anticipated. Did not see the final twist coming.

A creative tale that begins with a beloved children's story but turns into a violent and horrifying fable. Dark fantasy that starts slowly but pays off in the end.

DNF at about 40%.
I'm a fan of Durham's social media posts but I would never have guessed that the writer of this book and those posts are the same person. I found this novel overwrought, over-written, and difficult to engage with. I love the premise and I'm typically a fan of the dark and twisted but the writing was just tedious and oddly amateurish, so I tapped out.
