I’m on page 10. I can’t go on. It’s insufferable. The writing is so, so bad. I’m with the other readers who are disappointed, because in the right hands this could have been a great story.

THIS BOOK HAS RUUIIIIIIINED MY INNOCENCE!!!!!

Fun little read. I love an illustrated book as an adult. Just read it for yourself. This my first read of this author but I’ll be reading again. Here are the quotes I liked “ they were all rats to him…and all the world a maze.” “An endless mural of bones. It was a breathtaking effort that covered every inch of the carven’s walls from floor to ceiling– a striking in seamless image that was equal parts beautiful and morbid and spoke to a lifetime’s effort.”
“…the haggard war cry of a broken bear split the air like the fiercest of the fox’s arrows.”

It's not as average as a 3 star book. It's not as good as a 4 star book for me. When the "action" gets going, I was a little disappointed by where it went.

I saw someone compare this to the movie Midsommar and I wish it was. There's a very, very notable story that this becomes a lot like that I'll mark here
The Most Dangerous Game
. But I was disappointed it went that way. I felt like that was the most obvious way the story could have gone and considering the premise, I think I wanted something with a little more originality.

Not bad, just not really what I was looking for.

Winterset Hollow is where an old folktale comes to life. Imagine finding out that one of your favourite old stories was actually based in reality?! Would it be all magical, or would you be in danger?
I found this engaging and there are some quite violent and gory moments that came almost left field from the beginning of the book. (I would have read this even quicker but I was in the middle of a reading slump)
Folk horror is one of my favourite subgenres. It was like a more fantasy based version of the Wickerman with Barley Day reminding me of midsummer on Summerisle and the inclusion of the folk songs/rhymes.
medium-paced

Harrowing and charming, but Durham’s tale also packs effectively grim lessons about events beyond those of the fictional Hollow and Addington’s Isle. Well done.
