As tense and violent as the story gets, it's ultimately moving, even if it's predictable. I cried at the end of the third section.
The prose was often poetic, but the characters' voices could have been a bit more distinct.
I didn't like Mark, and didn't understand why the others did. He felt like a stock character.
The hunt and fight scenes were well written. Not all authors can do action, but that's a strength of this book.
My main frustration with the story was that the background of the protagonist was underutilized. He was trained for his entire upbringing as a survivalist, but that rarely kicks in. He should have been rescued by his training, but is often saved by other characters. And there should have been a bit more development earlier about who he really is. That was left until late and then info dumped.
I did love all of the animal characters. They were well conceived and distinct. I really felt their motivations and empathized with all of them. I would have liked it if one of them were female.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, even though it's imperfect.

Five stars isn't enough. This book needs more stars!! I thought this guy's memes were good, but wow. This blew me away. I loved the characters. I cared about what happened to them. The story was so unique and exciting. I want to erase my memory and read this for the first time again.
