This books was so unique; I loved all the characters, and their stories broke my heart. It was a little slow at times, but I devoured this book! It was so beautifully written. Highly recommend! Bing was probably my favorite of the creatures. I'll be thinking about this book for a long time!

I am not sure how to process this one. I’ve been interested in reading it for like two years now and it somehow hit and didn’t hit expectations. The underlying themes and plot line were great, the creation of the characters was also great - I could see them in my head. But sometimes it felt a little too much like sinister Pooh bear.

"It seems to me that it is the lens rather than the specimen that determines what we see … what we fear … what we pine for … what we try to kill or otherwise hold ever dear."
"He was riffled with a twinge of jealousy at the prospect of a life that simple, even if it meant being caged."
This one was has been on my TBR for a long time and I'm finally glad I read it! This is dark and depressing (right up my alley) and the writing is beautiful. It's a bit out there (but stick with it).

Ok.
Spoilers!
The concept was different and I enjoy a scary book. When everything kicks off and the gore really starts - the book went from a slow burn to really engaging.
I will also say I did enjoy the tie in to the family history in the end.
But the self harming rabbit was a bit much. Just no.
And why did the hero have to lose his friends? He didn’t lose enough?
It was all a bit of a let down for me there.
Overall, it was really unique and I was thoroughly entertained.

Well, that was different.
I didn't really care for the writing. The author used a lot of odd little phrases that, to my ears, didn't quite work. They're scattered throughout the book, but I noted down a few from the last few chapters:
"His wherewithal flickered like a lantern." (Wherewithal??? Note: I listened to the audiobook, so I MIGHT have heard something wrong.)
"He thought himself a puppet...the strings he never knew to be lashed to his wrists now choking the wind from his throat." ????
"Impossible to hear his manic ramblings with a different frequency." wut
These weird little phrases kept throwing me out of the story. But I'm a word nerd. Maybe they wouldn't bother others, but they bugged the heck out of me.
I am not a fan of an author reading their own books. Unless you're someone like Neil Gaiman, Just Don't Do It. This book did nothing to change my opinion in this regard.
OTOH, it's a novel take on an old trope, so it got an extra half star for me from that. Others seem to like it.
