This was a really interesting read and it had a lot of elements that I enjoyed. I liked getting to know our protagonist, Chris, and I particularly loved the friendship he and Sally develop. I appreciated the book's structure and how it feels almost like there's a cohesive narrative, but there's just a slightly 'off' feeling with the non-linear storytelling and the technically separate (but much more interconnected than I was expecting) tales. There's also, of course, a lot of great commentary embedded within this, and it definitely gave me something of a new (or developed) perspective on interwar Berlin.

My main issue with this book - and this may be more of a 'me thing' - was that the Peter/Otto storyline both confused and irked me and I just didn't really get what I was supposed to make of it all. I can accept that maybe it was a case of me just not quite 'getting it', but it still didn't make for an enjoyable reading experience and ruined the flow of an otherwise solid read for me.

I really like how irsherwood can depict how things were during the rise and near end of ww2. The characters he wrote about in the diary entries were all so interesting and again how they all interacted during this time period.

2.5 stars. Some interesting / dull parts. Pacing was slow at times but the characters are well fleshed out
