I honestly didn’t know what was going on for most of the book but I still enjoyed it. It just went over my head but that’s on me. I always love when authors narrate their own books!

ms. oyeyemi is excellent at weaving stories that feel like fairy tales for grown ups, and this was definitely no exception. i read through some of the reviews before i started reading myself, and i feel like other people went into this book expecting something else, and that's why they were disappointed. i, personally, got exactly what i signed up for, and i am so very glad that i did.

This book is really a journey. That's the best way to explain it. The storytelling is so poetic and gentle, you're just taking a stroll through the lives of three generations of women. It's soft and nostalgic in a way I didn't expect and quickly become one of my favorite books.

Gorgeous + freaky + completely immersive. I loved the characters + the descriptions + I printed out Emily Dickinson's gingerbread recipe to try out myself :-)

This book is weird, meandering, and hard to recommend. Still, I loved it.

Utterly confused and bored 40 pages in. Couldn’t finish.

if Murakami had a take on ‘Great Expectations,’ mixed it with fairytale magic, and sprinkled ‘fucks’ all over it — what a joy.

“That heart, ground to ash and shot through with darts of heat, salt, spice, and sulphorous syrup . . . you are phenomenal. You’ve ruined my life forever. Thank you.”

I really tried to like it, but I couldn't. Pacing was all over the place. There were plot holes and also we just ignored the incest??
