Hard to read,
The beginning was confusing, boring and slow. The middle was very interesting. The end was psychedelic and hard to grasp. The characters stayed really distant.

I've never watched the movie, but I wanted to read this one because Nila was watching the movie in school. It's a very good book and a compelling read - I didn't want to put it down. Next up: the movie.

I can't put my finger on this, it gives you a great feeling of calm afterward, as work and loading the dishwasher obviously doesn't matter against the greater grandeur of the universe. It was written in 1968 but doesn't feel dated, except here and there (like when they talk about the typing pool on the moon!) Reviewers say the second half was better and it does have a timeless, mystical feel. I saw the film as a teenager and didn't have a clue what was going on, but now I understand.
Basically an alien intelligence has a great impact on man's formative development, and three million years later that intelligence is re-awoken during a survey of the moon. Subsequently a team of astronauts are sent to the outreaches of the solar system on a mission to Jupiter and Saturn, and that mission goes badly wrong...
In parts 2001 reads like a tourist guide to Jupiter and Saturn (not that I'm likely to visit in the near future). Clarke writes with authority - he is the Tolkein of the science fiction world, you can believe him because he's obviously an expert in astronomy and physics and all of that. I don't generally read science fiction but I did enjoy this.

Even if nothing whatsoever was discovered about T.M.A.-1, and it remained an eternal mystery, Man would know that he was not unique in the Universe
This book was fascinating, to say the least, and it can be said that most, if not all, SCI-Fi movies and books take some inspiration from this famous novel/movie.
It was incredibly clever and interesting to read. A definite page-turner
