It took me a while to get back in the groove of this series, since it's been so long since I've read the first book. When I did, however, I remembered just why I liked it so much. The heroine is smart and relatable, and makes pretty good decisions. I like that she's not eager to be a pushover or lovesick when she knows the man she likes isn't up for that kind of relationship at the moment, if ever. The town of Wilfred and its various townspeople are quirky and fun. I quite like Sam, and we learn a lot about him in here. We also get some intriguing glimpses into Marilyn Wilfred. The plot of this book revolved around a murder that took place on the site of the town's old mill that was set to be made into a retreat center. The book's mix of humor, emotion, and action kept me intrigued. Now I need the next one.

This was a pretty good read! Wasn’t as good as the first but it was still entertaining! Sanders does a great job of misleading both the protagonist & the reader about who committed the crime, while still leaving enough clues that one could maybe figure it out before the end. Two books in & I’m getting pretty attached to Wilfred and all it’s characters. I did take one point off in the rating for some misuse of Indigenous words/aspects of culture. If it was intended to reflect the character’s ideas & not the author’s own thoughts, the author did not do a good enough job making that clear.

Josie is still discovering how to use her magic. She is thrown off when her grandmother's letters come up telling her how to deal with hexes. She's confused and wary but moving ahead with helping the architect in town, Lewis, learn more about the mill that he is renovating into a retreat center. Meanwhile, old flame Sam is back in town. With his wife. And a baby.
So Josie just keeps living her life until Sam's wife disappears. Then a body shows up. And another body. Plus the levee is under siege with all the rain and there's all the books whispering about a curse and a mystery about Sam's great-aunt. There's... a lot going on in this book. Fast, fun and fluffy with some growth by Josie so three and a half stars rounded up for Goodreads.
