4.75ish??? i have no idea
a very entertaining audiobook, but i think the actual book itself is less good than the first book. still very fun! just slightly less interesting, mainly because my favorite character died. it was intriguing and i liked following the story a lot, i just think the mystery wasn’t as successful. i’m just glad i understood all of the genetics conversations

After an unreasonably long reading slump, this was the perfect book to bring me out. The interview-style writing and fast-paced storytelling were incredible. Since it's been more than 10 months since I read the first in the series, I could catch back up with the plot and characters quickly, and I was pulled in just as fast. Without spoilers - I was both pleasantly surprised with the twists and heartbroken. I'm very excited to complete this series soon!
God, I inhaled this. Always glad (and relieved) when book 2 lives up to my love of book 1. Not much can be said about it without spoiling everything from book 1 (and a lot from book 2, because, man, do we find out STUFF), except that it was a deserving sequel filled with all the super nerdy excitement of its predecessor. My only possible complain is that, since it's been a while since I read the first, I didn't feel as connected with some of the characters--and I think that is on the writing a little bit, too. I'm not sure where on earth (or elsewhere) the third in the series could go now, but that unpredictability has always been a strength for this super-realistic sci-fi premise.
Also, I'd like to note that there is a wonderful example in here of a shitty misogynist character done well. Often authors (let's face it, usually male authors) will include one of those and it comes off as gross, because they do it in such a way that makes it seem like they're promoting or at least allowing that behavior. Here's the thing: there's a difference between including a realistically shitty character and dealing with it properly and just creating a world in which that shitty behavior is okay and par for the course. Anyway, Neuvel does it the right way, as he does every time, with every character, of which there is such a magnificent range. Thank you.

Well, that certainly escalated quickly. Whole cities wiped off the map, hundreds of millions of people dead, main characters killed off... it seems no one has plot armor in this series.
Again, the full cast for the audiobook elevates this above the source material, making it that much more entertaining. I didn’t buy into the later chapters, though, where people were narrating what they were doing, as that kind of broke my immersion. Still, overall it was a good story.
On to the next one.

Despite one major thing I really didn't like, this was another solid entry in this series. I've heard the third book is disappointing so I'll adjust my expectations accordingly!
