Although nonfiction is probably my least favorite genre of literature, I actually liked reading this book. There were a few parts where I got a little lost or bored, but I loved how much Armstrong emphasized the men of the Endurance's crew and their personalities. I was surprised at how touched I was at the end of the book when Shackleton's rescue team returned to the stranded crew (not a spoiler because Armstrong tells you they survive at the beginning) and how connected I felt to the men. This is a nonfiction book that definitely reads like a narrative, thanks in part to Armstrong's inclusions of dialogue between the crew, clear photos of the men, and well-selected details. I particularly liked the parts about the ways that the men spent their free time, like making a town for their sled dogs. Basically, this book was not something that I would've read out of my own free will, but I ended up enjoying it for the most part.

Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World follows the 1915 expedition of Ernest Shackleton and his crew aboard the Endurance. Jennifer Armstrong recreates the real perils of Antarctic exploration as she allows the reader to experience the expedition alongside the crew. The voyage goes according to plan until the frozen sea encases the Endurance in its unmoving waves. As the crew waits for spring, the pressure of the ice destroys the vessel, and the 28-man crew must find some way to survive in the Antarctic with minimal supplies. Through Shackleton’s example, the reader learns the true meaning of endurance as he and the crew overcome the perils of minimal food supplies, frostbite, and illness. In the end, even though Shackleton fails to make it all the way to the bottom of the world, he never stops trying. Shackelton teaches readers to keep trying no matter the horrendous conditions or number of failures endured. Although non-fiction usually fails to tickle my fancy, I find I like this book for the morals it teaches. Armstrong certainly knows how to spin a tale in a way that keeps the reader interested. Readers of all ages should enjoy Shackleton’s story as much as I did.

DANG, this book was so good. Got so choked up at the end - I can't even believe this all is a true story.
NON-FICTION, ADVENTURE, DRAMA
This is the true story of an exploration crew travelling to the Antarctic, shipwrecking, and their ultimate survival. The leader of this group of men, Shackleton, had always had a spirit of adventure and wanted to be the first man to make the most Southern trip into Antarctica. With a crew of hand chosen men, the blessing of Queen Alexandra, and a beautifully crafted ship, the journey began. What the men would soon come to realize though is that this would be no ordinary journey. Upon arriving in Antarctica the men faces storms of snow and ice, perolous encournters with the wild life, and they ultimaty found their shif the "Endurance" runaground with no hopes of sailing ever again. Over the course of 18 months the men faced near death experiences, the were pushed beyound what they thought they were capable of. But the miracle they truly face was survival.
This was a fantastic read I was not expecting to like this book as I don't normally read non-fiction, but it was engaging and inspiring to read this story.
