This book was so cute! No spoilers but the humor, the development, and the texting was just perfect. You really feel like you know the characters inside out by the end of the book so the ending feels so natural. The character interactions are realistic and relatable. If you enjoy emotional slow burns, it’s a must read.

I don't know if it was being in a hard lockdown (#4 in Melbourne) or the characters or the story, but I felt like I couldn't get close to the characters in the story. I felt Sam and Penny were just in the wrong time for each other, Penny being more mature, and Sam just floating not know where he is going in life.

And then there's the superficial secondary characters that just seem so overdone, Celeste with her 40 turning 20 attitude, Jude with her crush on her non-biological uncle that's not her uncle, and Mallory with her snobby wannabe upper attitude. I felt there was more drama and story with these characters than that of Sam and Penny.

This book takes you on a journey of love and loss and everything in between. A cute journey of a start of a realationship where they can rely on the person to just listen and be there. At the end of the book I was to the point screaming for them to just go to therapy though please.

At first I was put off by the writing style because it was a lot of "telling" rather than "showing," and the characters weren't really likeable. It wasn't until further along when the pace picked up that I was able to connect with the story. The main characters are flawed; they're judgemental and bitter-- which is off-putting at first, but was explained later on. The secondary characters are flat for most of the book, but they're developed a bit later on as well. While the pop culture references may be unpalatable for some, I found them relateable as an 18 year old. They effectively set the story in the present. Although I have to admit, some of the dialogue choices were questionable.
