Thoroughly enjoyable. The Telemachus family has psychic talents but also everyday problems of jobs and relationships. I like how the story wove their abilities throughout, adding to the woes of being 'almost famous'.

So weird.

I wasn't sure I liked this book until the very end. I love the ending. The closure. The event. I still think it's a weird book, but I enjoyed the uniqueness of it. And the ending feels good to read.

Spoonbenders is one of the craziest rides I've been on in a while. This novel took me a while to get hooked, but when I did, I couldn't put the book down. There's a lot going on. In the beginning of the novel, it's like picking up breadcrumbs and you have no idea where they are taking you. We are introduced to Matty and the Telemachus family, who used to be famous for their Amazing (with a capital A) abilities but the loss of the matriarch made the act fall apart. Maureen Telemachus had true psychic abilities, and passed them down to her children. Teddy, Maureen's husband, had always been in the game for the money, but when he met Maureen in an experimental group, he knew she was the real psychic thing. Unfortunately, he couldn't save her from her fate, and it left everyone downtrodden... until Matty learned about his secret powers. While Teddy is off on his daily search for love, Matty and his uncle Frankie are developing Matty's powers... mostly for Frankie's own selfish needs. And while they're palling around, Matty's mother Irene is trying to get her life back together and attempting a long distance relationship. Then, there's Buddy, whose precognitive powers have him hustling to complete a series of tasks that he knows are necessary, but unsure of how they will all turn out in the end.
It's a complicated plot, but comes together so well. In summary, Gregory's characters are wonderfully complex and dynamic, and the way he weaves the plot together is like his very own magic trick.By the end of the novel, all I could do was shake my head and smile.

The plot was fun, and was well layed out to complement the various back stories of a multitude of characters. Daryl Gregory was able to instrumentally incorporate a few various themes into one story to make it a very fresh and fun novel to read; there was the looming threat of the mob, the fantastical lure of psychic powers as well as the conspiracy of secret government organizations. All of the characters were fleshed out with dynamic struggles that pushed their growth throughout the novel, while leading to humorous pitfalls now and then to increase the intensity of the story.

The main drawback for me, was that because Daryl Gregory had incorporated so many characters, we got snatches of each of their stories as the novel unfolded. This meant that while, there were numerous moments throughout the plotline where the stories interconnected, I wasn't ever able to truly bond with any of the characters. This drawback depleted from the "heart" of the story as I wasn't overly invested in what was happening to the characters, and without that emotional investment, it felt like a second-hand story being told rather than an experience to be devoured by.

2.5 stars overall for an overrated book. This is not anything close to Chabon or Jonathan Lethem as NPR would have you believe. It's a fun story with some interesting/engaging characters, but the overall fluff, and want to be a family story deeper than it is, is taxing at nearly 500 pages. This MIGHT do well as movie, but will probably translate just as hokey as the book.

Fun. Lots of characters and they are different and engaging.

I really liked this book. I thought the telepathic aspects of it were just fun and intriguing. I was initially a bit concerned because it has a quote by the author of "The Nest" saying how great this book is and since I didn't love "The Nest" (I found it overrated) I was a bit skeptical. That being said-this books was so fun until the last 75-100 pages or so where I walked away feeling unsatisfied. I certainly don't like when book endings are all wrapped up in a big perfect bow - but it almost seemed as if the author was trying to be a bit too vague. Also probably a little bit more crude than necessary - which ended up taking away from some of the more comical situations (I found it to be a cop out).
