1950s conmen, psychics, spy stuff, family drama, coming of age, timestream manipulation...a lot of things that are very my shit
Another book I probably wouldn't have read if it wasn't for Book Club, so thanks BC! I really did like this one, but it wasn't what I expected. I also think if I could give half-stars this would be a 3.5. Even though the content was heavy at times, there was also a good amount of humor.
3 1/2. family drama with psychics, plus the Government and the mob. I think the author did a really great job of keeping all the many threads of the story moving forward in a not confusing way. Great characters who demonstrated how you can love someone and be driven totally crazy by their choices.
The Sting meets Owen Meany. I struggled a bit at first with the shifting timeliness and the multiple characters - trying to keep straight the generations and relationships. But I liked the story more and more the further I got into it.
One negative for me was what Matty first discovered as the trigger for his or of body experiences. It is juvenile of the author.

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. Perhaps I've been reading "too much" YA lately but there was something very gratifying and heart rending about adult characters both striving for some magic in their lives (a better job, better prospects for their children, an honest relationship, paid bills etc) and actually being magical (or at least clairvoyant in some respect) and having not gained anything from it. Also, mix in some mobsters, some government spies and top with goji berries.
All in all this was a delicious book and it was very well read by Ari Fliakos.

Life is to short to read about a pervy teenage peeping Tom and his ancient grampa who picks up women at the grocery store. Ew. Just Ew.
