I am really enjoying this book! It feels especially relevant in this time that we find ourself in. It is a lovely reminder of women who have led the way in healing and resistant in circumstances where everything looked impossible.
This passage particularly stands out to me:
"There is something in the DNA of daughters, a fierceness not easily squelched. The men may be named, but the daughters move the liberation forward in the shadows of patriarchy (76)."

As the mama to a six month old daughter who is just learning to navigate this wild world, I endorse this.

Thank you Kelley!

I really liked this book. I liked the focus on the women of Exodus and I will read that book in a different way because of this one.

I attended a retreat a few years back and Kelley preached Exodus to me in a way I'd never heard it preached before. Looking in the margins and specifically at the women in the story of Exodus brought new life and color to a story I'd been hearing my entire life. I left that weekend changed in a large part because of Kelley's theology. When I saw this book was in the making, I pre-ordered it immediately. I savored my journey through the pages as she unpacked liberation and the subversive spaces women showed up to change the trajectory of history. What a timely reminder.

It’s a beautiful and relevant and timely book paralleling the women of Exodus with women in our world today (and in recent history) and it is COMPELLING. This is what I love about reading widely and diversely— Kelley, as an adopted woman with a husband of a different ethnicity and adopted children, who has lived in America and Burundi, who has deep knowledge and a unique perspective, can illuminate things in and about Scripture in a way that others couldn’t. And I am better for having read her words from her heart and her thoughtful and thought-prov

A book about the women of Exodus? Yes, please. Did you know there are 12 women in Exodus who have a story to share with us? I did not. A book about freedom from the chains that hold us in slavery? Yes, please. A book about resistance, strength, and truthtelling? About today's women who are doing important liberating work in their homes, communities, and workplaces? Yes, yes, yes. This book weaves the past with the present and invites us to listen and learn from each other. This book gives all women permission to take action, in whatever way they can, to step forward into freedom for themselves and others. The faithfulness of the women of Exodus inspire us to faithfulness we need today.

Based on the description, I expected that this book would be good. It far surpassed my expectations. Through her powerful examination of the stories of the women of Exodus, Kelley Nikondeha has issued a call to her readers - a call to engage in the hard, painful, beautiful, entirely necessary and worthwhile work of fighting for freedom. It's beautifully written and the way that Nikondeha has interwoven the stories of the women in her own life with the stories of the Exodus women is poignant and compelling. This is a book I'll be recommending to all of the women in my life.

I seriously loved everything about Defiant. Kelley takes you on a journey of Exodus looking at the women in the background. She brings them front and center, introduces us to them, and builds around their store. One of my favorite parts of this book is that Kelley rounds out these women's stories to help us see them clearly, understand what they may have been thinking and feeling, and connects them to the bigger story of what God was doing there. It's beautiful. Grab a copy today!

I was given an advanced reader copy.
