I can't do it. I'm 4% - 30 MINUTES - into this book and I've been told Aila is socially and generally anxious 36 times. I've also been TOLD how anxious she is, while not seeing any of it. The narrator is perfect. She's great.

But the authors way of writing was fucking killing me. Who was the narrator talking to???? Was Aila talking to herself???? The commentary of some random 3rd person in the text is absolutely horrible. As I'm listening the author will make some comment on how silly cell phones are! Or how Aila wished people didn't existed! Because

AILA ISNT LIKE OTHER GIRLS.

JESUS WE GET IT. Can we stop writing women who hate other women??? IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD, CHAPPELL ROAN???

This was such a cozy debut novel. One that had actual enemies to lovers by the end - and queer! This was a slow build but very cozy. And the magical animals were so fun. Tanya is MVP.

I had a few problems, mainly in the first half. I feel like the pacing was atrocious until around 50% and a lot could've been condensed. Everything with Connor after a certain point also got very old...

That said this was a good debut and I can't wait to read Voidwalker soon!

I found the writing style had too many adjectives for me personally.

im not quite sure how to describe my feelings on this book. it's got everything i should enjoy: fantastic beasts, zookeeping, and lgbtqa+ themes.

however, i was completely underwhelmed by it all. mostly due to the main character, aila.
while im a person who has anxiety, has been medicated for it in the past, i could understand her to a point. but holy shit was this girl annoying. i don't think ive been this annoyed by a main character in years.

yes, she got better somewhere in the middle of the book but the way she was a horrible friend to tanya, kept a grudge against someone for years over something so insignificant i could only laugh.

though i really loved the bits about animal husbandry! all in all, quite disappointing and i couldnt wait for the book to be over so i could be done with it.
