We're baaaaack! Sofia was abducted by the Ageless and wound up being turned into a vampire (turns out being in the Elder's realm, Cruor, can break down the immunity).
She's then possessed by what we can assume is the main Elder and we find out that Yuri, Ashley, Liana and Xavier are also possessed by Elders.
An insinuation that their realm is not stable and then Sofia/Ivana makes her way to the hut where Derek, Corinne, Ibrahim and Derek's daughter, Rose, are hiding out.
Ivana tries to convince Derek to take her to the Hawk's headquarters but when Derek wavers on taking her, the Elder forces her back to The Shade.

Now that I've finished the book, some of the details are a bit hazy but we know that the Sanctuary (the Ageless & witches realm) created portals between the different realms and Earth. They had destroyed all of the realms, so Derek & Sofia thought, but Ibrahim had convinced the Ageless (his cousin, Odelia) to leave the last Aviary portal open as that's where it was thought Kiev had taken Ben, the Novak's son.
Also Sofia's father, who had promised to become a Hawk in the Aviary in order to have the Hawk's help attack the Blood Keep, was taken to the Aviary.
Throughout the story, the Ageless, Ibrahim and the witches do their share of staying out of and getting into the different aspects of what is going on. We also see Zinnia and Gavin forming a relationship and Zinnia realizing that she would rather be one with the Novaks than continue with the Hawks.
Sofia & Derek wind up going into the Aviary to look for their son, on a 12 hour time limit, and upon entering they notice a huge snake. Note for later. They are disguised as Hawks but cannot fly (disguise courtesy of the witches/Ibrahim). They find Aiden in a meeting, and meet up with some of the humans that were being held in the Aviary (Anna, Ian & also Kyle). Anna has been taking care of Ben, so it is true that he was taken to the Aviary (still not sure how he got there?). All of them attempt to leave when Arron attacks. Once they are on the ground, close to the portal back to Earth, everyone is free to get into the portal except Sofia, who is being held by the snake which is now revealed to be KIEV. He winds up letting her go and they all escape back to Earth and Ibrahim closes the final portal after telling the Ageless that he wants to stay, along with a dozen witches who no longer want to be a part of the Sanctuary, and that he wants to marry Corinne.
Back at the Shade, Xavier's vessel body is found and nurtured back to life. He & Vivienne get married, Zinnia and Gavin are a couple, Claudia & Yuri are a couple, Liana & C are back together, the twins are united for the first time since birth. Abby is still a 5-6 year old vampire, Aiden is still a Hawk (bird beak, wings and all) and the California beach house that the Novaks toured, Aiden had purchased for them so now they spend time between the Shade and the beach house.
They let the humans live AS HUMANS, in town houses, volunteering to stay with the Shade and even let some light onto the beach with the help of Corinne (whose powers were returned), Ibrahim, and the witches. Also the humans are free to leave at their choosing.
This is technically the last book in the series about Sofia & Derek but they will be mentioned in some of the other books in this series. The next series line is reportedly about Kiev.

I loved the story of Derek and Sophia. I feel like I haven't read a really great vampire series in a awhile and this really ticked all of my boxes. It was intriguing and action-packed!

I finished this book in 4 hours....
lol no regrets
it was fucking fabulous. literally everything I wanted from this book. also the last two-three chapters were pure bliss. and I wanted more of them just doing everyday things like weddings and joking
my favorite thing was Abby telling Derek how he thought the twins happened. I think that Derek and Sophia are probs gonna take care of her a lot but Ashley might be the one to adopt her per se.
Vivienne AND Xavier got married. that chapter was pure bliss. the competition between Sophia and Derek to dress their party better XD and the light hearted joking:')))))
I thought that solving the problem of the elders was a little too easy, but the witches actually decided to help for once, so it was an easy fight I guess.
I'm definitely excited for Kiev's story. not sure who he'll end up with, but I'm excited to see his return to humanity:')
