It’s hard to say anything about this book at all without giving things away. I’ve definitely never read anything like this before and I really appreciated the fresh idea. I loved the duel characters from different times and thought that Faring did and excellent job of giving them very distinct voices. Also A++ on building atmosphere

I was immediately drawn to this book because of the cover, it’s spooky looking and I love all things spooky. It also felt reminiscent of the cover of House by Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti, which was the first book to ever really scare me (and some of the imagery in it still does to this day!) so I think my subconscious really led me to this one, and I’m so glad it did!

Trigger warnings: self-harm, suicide, miscarriage, STATUTORY RAPE, PEDOPHILIA

okay so, I had some...high expectations going into this book. I mean just look at this cover, it's beautiful. With a creepy atmosphere that reminds me of those horror movies, you find on syfy, I thought I found a winner. Unfortunately, I couldn't be more wrong.

The writing was good... I'll give it that and because of that, I'm quite interested in seeing future works by the author. But I literally felt like this book was just going in circles and getting nowhere. Angel's POV was... confusing at times and I didn't enjoy reading from her as much as I did Mavi's. There wasn't really any character development and at times it was quite confusing (even though yes I know it's supposed to be a horror/mystery, but still.)

One of the things that really brought it down for me was the plot twist that was a complete 180. It changed everything and I will say that it was a clever little plot twist I didn't see coming. Despite that, I don't feel like it worked for this story because after that, might as well throw out the first half of the book and pretend it never happened and not to mention it was SO confusing, I had to re-read a couple of times and still don't understand why. It felt like such a cop-out.

Another big thing for me is the trigger warnings. Yes, I do agree that writers can write what they want, it's not terrible to have triggering content as long as it's done respectfully. But you have to challenge it. And in this case, it wasn't challenged. And I am talking about the statutory rape and pedophilia, and this is where the spoilers come in okay.

So if you don't wanna see spoilers, don't read.

So basically, the plot twist is that its a game, none of it's real and it's solely for peoples enjoyment and the "others" are the players who upload their consciousness into the game. In the book, the girls who might I add, are between the ages of 10-14/15 tops, report that men touch them at night, and what to the characters/npc's say? Oh okay how wrong let's see what's happening and honestly do nothing about it???? Also, the fact that people upload their consciousness into a game to touch little girls, CHILDREN (idec if it's a game) is just wrong.

And might I add, none of it was challenged. Not to mention one of the teachers 'Mr Lamm' was basically accused of touching the girls, the characters, specifically Mavi, we're like oh no he could never we need to investigate this more, if he did, it's terrible, but how could he? He's a sweet man. Like.... que...??? QUE??? If a little kid comes to you and says this person is touching them inappropriately, you don't look for all the reasons WHy it can't be them. I could honestly go on, but for my sanity, I can't. The pedophilia was not challenged in my eyes and the reasoning for even being IN this book is not okay.

If you like a dark, creepy and chilling read than The Tenth Girl is for you! I really liked the writing. I thought the story was unique. It has plenty of suspense and of course a huge twist.  I am going to say that this book does have a lot of trigger warnings. Please take precaution before reading this book. That being said I thought it was a great and unique horror read but it might not be for everyone.

This went in a direction I was not expecting. But from things I noticed on the cover before I started I feel like I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was. I'm not sure how I feel overall, there are parts I'm still confused by. I just dunno about this one.

I really wanted to like this debut YA Horror novel since the concept sounded like it had so much potential. Unfortunately, it didn't really work for me overall. What I did like was all of atmosphere and the author's style in the beginning especially. Of the two perspective characters, Mavi was the only one I was particularly intrigued by. As this overly long novel progressed I wished that we didn't have split POV chapters. Also just a fair warning about the ending - the twist really comes at you from nowhere and a lot of readers are probably going to find it to be very polarizing. I, for one, am firmly in the what-kind-of-ending-was-that camp.

Hard to say what I thought of this book without spoiling major plot points but I have so many conflicting emotions???

First Reaction: I liked the plot twist but think I would have enjoyed it more if it had happened 100 pages sooner. It happened pretty late in the book and I felt that as a reader I wasn't given enough time to breathe in the new information that was given to us. Major events started happening super quickly, which I feel could've been okay if the change within the world of the book wasn't so drastic. Some of my favorite sections in the book happened post plot-twist and I would have loved to read the development the philosophical questions it kinda skims.

SPOILER THOUGHTS:

Lol while reading the book pre plot twist I thought: a) everyone was stuck on a time loop b) that Angel was actually alive in our present and for whatever reason at the school and everyone else was dead/ghosts and c)everyone was in purgatory!

Also this book is lowkey a mashup of Black Mirror episodes Playtest x USS Callister x San Junipero

Ten pages into this book, I thought, damn, this is going to be a five-star book, easily. I can’t pinpoint where the rating started to drop, but by the time I finished, I felt like I was reading a completely different book.

My biggest issue with this book is the plot (it seems to be the common complaint.) There came a point where it felt like it was dragging, but there were still seventy pages left, and then...the plot twist. Where the fuck did THAT come from?

I liked the characters, but I felt like the two main characters had very similar voices, so I got confused several times.

One star of my review goes to Sara Farring’s writing, which is absolutely beautiful and atmospheric, along with the gothic vibes. The second star is for the connection to Argentine history that is so often forgotten and unknown by the rest of the world.

This book took me completely by surprise, and not necessarily in a good way. I would read another Sara Farring book for her writing alone, but this particular story was not to my preference.

(I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review)

Real rating: 4.5/5 stars

Who is the tenth girl?...She is a pack of mysteries fit into one ivory tendril. But the only mystery I've solved is that she doesn't want to speak to me, which is exactly what I need her to do.

Let me try to gather my thoughts...it took me so long to read this book not because I wasn't invested and caught up in the story, which was polished and thrilling and heart-pounding from the get-go, but because I'm a total *wuss* and had to only read it in public places (like my lunch break at work) and, well, it was still hard to find the time.

One thing that stands out as perfectly amazing in this story is the character growth. There's an added under-layer to that of "oh wow" once you get to the end and read through the twist, but let's just say — Mavi, and Angel, each go on a really well thought-out and developed journey in this book.

The setting descriptions were vivid and piercing, making you feel like you're *at* Vaccaro School in all its frigid, icy wonder.

The history of the Zapuche was fascinating as well and clearly so nicely plotted out.

Regarding the twist at the climactic moment, I will say that I was briefly disappointed AT FIRST, but quickly came to realize — it was the only way the book could end, and Faring did an excellent job following through on her promises and delivering a satisfying conclusion to this book.
