Hmm...this was a strange one. The first half was a bit slow, and I'm not sure how I feel about the plot twist. Certainly unique!
This was the most unbelievably confusing and ridiculous book I have ever read. I didn't get it, not at all. It's been a year since I read this and I still don't know what happened at the end. Did everyone die? Was the whole story about a video game? Did the steak dude do anything? Was everyone actually a ghost?! I don't know.
The first 100 pages were fine and interesting but all of a sudden Faring started dropping 1000 miles out of the box plot pointss and twists and turns that made no sense whatsoever, so by the time I made it to page 350 I didn't even know who was who. I resorted to reading spoilers to at least get an idea of what happened in the end, but even then I couldn't figure it out. All I know is that is that it had something to do with ghosts and a cheese steak eating demon god.
A good premise, but a bad story. Very cluttered and scattered.

The ending was very disappointing. It was just a bunch of words about nothing. Just too many words!
I like books of all genres. I like books that cross genres.
This book was a mess. From the harmful stereotype that indigenous people practice human sacrifice and the overt racism toward the “nut-brown” girl, it was a mess.
I tried to overlook the racism. After all, it’s fiction in a made up world, right? What started out with a beautifully written gothic style horror about a haunted mansion and a mysterious past devolved into a chaotic knock-off sci fi mess. It’s like the author forgot where the book was going but she had this good ending on a different book she liked so she just mashed the two together. It’s an awful mess. And I wasted not only an audible credit on it but several hours of my time that I can never get back.

This book was going along really great... Until the twist. At that point, it suddenly turned from a gothic haunted house story to a "WTF is even happening" story. You'll either love it or hate it. I finished it because I very rarely abandon a book, particularly when it's an audiobook. And the first part was good enough that I am willing to read something else by this author. But if the next book has a weird twist of this caliber, I'll probably skip any future books.
I'm skipping this one. Heard about it & was excited but the first chapter did nothing for me & based on the reviews, I'm not sure it'll get better. At least it was a library book!
dark
slow-paced
Halfway through I was genuinely shocked about the average rating because I was really enjoying it, but then it started making less and less sense?? And that final plot twist? Hmmmm no thank you. It gets two and a half stars for the first like 250 pages.
2.5 stars. If you’re really into Black Mirror, you’ll probably love this book. I was somewhat enjoying it while reading, but it was soooo slow, and took forever for any bit of excitement or plot twists to occur, and the ending was just so disappointing to me, and made me feel like I wasted my time.
