Had to read this classic !! Never realized how much my favorite movie version (1999) pulled directly from the book! Especially love the Gene Wilder tortoise part so that was fun to read. Also the poetry made so much sense with the 2010 movie storyline. Overall-- complete nonsense lol

I don't understand what I got out of this as a child. Peculiar still, even to this day.

Few children's books have aged so well as 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Indeed, it's by far more well-known than the poetry parodied in it. Carroll's wandering, anarchistic story, with its nonsensical dialogue and outlandish events still entertains today. Moreover, Alice feels like a real child, with a vivid imagination, and the perfect lead into Carroll's wild fantasy. Most of the creatures she meets in Wonderland are dominant, authoritarian and blunt adult figures, and like many adults in the real world, pretty nonsensical to seven-year old child. Nevertheless, Alice grows braver along the way, and in the end finally dares to stand up against them. There's little structure to the book, and the book retains a rather improvised character, but is a delight to read from start to end.
'Through the Looking Glass', on the other hand, is pretty structured from the outset, and therefore less compelling. The chess motive makes the book more rigid than desirable, and the dreamlike quality is now not a logical consequence of an improvised tale, but a deliberately used plot device to change scenes, most obviously in the very weak 'Wool and Water' chapter. Nevertheless, this book, too contains some great fantasies and one great scene (Tweedledum and Tweedledee), not to mention the classic poem 'Jabberwocky'.
Sir John Tenniel's awesome illustrations are the tales' perfect companions, and greatly add to the surreal atmosphere. They're particularly well reprinted in this edition.
