This was just my second Agatha Christie reading (after Murder on the Orient Express) and although I liked this one, I was a little disappointed with it. The writing was excellent, and the characters were well done, but I felt the entire Whodunnit aspect was a bit predictable and drawn out. I was excited for the spookiness, but the majority of the story doesn't really revolve around the Halloween Party itself. I still enjoyed it, though. I recommend it to anyone that likes mysteries and whodunnits.

I love the Agatha Christie books narrated by Hugh Fraser and this is no exception. I actually remembered some of this story, even though it's been years since I've read it and it was just as good in audio form as it was reading it myself. This is a Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver mystery and although the story begins with the murder of a boastful little girl, it's not long before Poirot figures out the story began several years before. I used to read these mysteries all the time when I was young, and read every copy I could get my hands on, either at my local used bookstore or from the library. At some point, I had the majority of them in paperback although I think I have since donated most of them. So it's been a joy to rediscover these books in audio and Hugh Fraser does a wonderful job with the books that he narrates. I am looking forward to hearing more!
This was my first encounter with Mrs. Oliver in Agatha Christie's books, and I absolutely loved her. The self-parody, her witty remarks, and her frustrations with Poirot were extremely well done—charming and thoroughly entertaining! I found it to be one of the funniest Christie novels I’ve read, with Mrs. Oliver’s character bringing a lighthearted touch to the mystery. Christie's sense of humor really shines through here, along with subtle philosophical musings and her ruthlessly honest portrayal of human nature—not as we wish it to be, but as it truly is. While the ending could have been stronger, the journey was so enjoyable that it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the story.
“To keep something wild is far more difficult than to preserve it.”
“You want beauty,” said Hercule Poirot. “Beauty at any price. For me, it is truth I want. Always truth.”
“Put that in your mustache and smoke it.”(love this one:))
