While this is the first Agatha Cristie book I've ever read, her legacy definitely precedes her. Whether you know who she is or not, I feel like most people would have at least heard the name 'Agatha Cristie'. Safe to say I wasn't disappointed. I thought this book was the perfect length for a whodunnit mystery. Many books of this style can drag on unnecessarily, losing the momentum of the plot and the engagement of the audience. This, however, was succint and well-structured, allowing plenty of time to understand each character (or 'suspect' in my mind) and form an impression of this small, sleepy town that gets suddenly turned on it's head, following the murder of a 13 year old girl.
Obviously, a whodunnit book today is going to differ from one written by Agatha Cristie in her time. But I thought that the late 60's charm made this book all the more appealing. The 60's were hardly a time to be considered 'different' or 'offbeat', and the time Poirot spent hearing each character's story of what happened to Joyce showcased this in a hilarious way. The snide, judgemental remarks from housewives, and the humourously awful things people would say about a poor, murdered girl was a exactly what you'd expect from a small, traditional town where everyone knows everyone's business.
At some points I felt like this book got a little repetitive and slow, however the ending and the discovery of who actually killed Joyce and how everything is interwoven was a great way to top everything off.
I'm definitely keen to read some more Agatha Cristie in the future.

Really fun production put on by the BBC.
PSA: This is a typical murder mystery that happens to take place at a Halloween party. It is not, otherwise, Halloween themed.

Author, Ariadne Oliver, attends a Halloween Party while visiting a friend. During the preparation a young girl boasts that she has seen a murder taking place. Knowing that she is a liar, she is largely ignored by those in attendance, but that night at the party the girl is murdered. Mrs. Oliver seeks the assistance of her friend, Hercule Poirot, to uncover the identity of the murderer.
A bit less tightly structured than many Agatha Christie novels. I felt it was fairly easy to identify the murderer early on in the story. However, it was still a good read.

It meandered a bit but that's ok it was still a good read.

So here’s the thing. I am dumb. I thought this was a Halloween book, perfect for spooky season. Turns out it wasn’t, just a run-of-the-mill murder mystery. Didn’t hate it, it was a little basic in its formulation but I guess she is the GOAT so what do I know?
