Decent book
This was a good book. I would say that it was not one of Grisham's best. I feel it lacked the suspense and excitement of his other books.

At last, a good John Grisham story! I always thought you couldn’t go wrong with Grisham but my last two reads were disappointing. This was a great court room thriller with a “surprise” ending you could see a mile away, but which made it no less satisfying. All the characters are, well, characters which adds to the fun of this page-turner.
3.5 stars
To me, reading Grisham is like coming home. I haven't read him in a really long time, so I was looking forward to curling up and sinking in - and I did. I loved the setting and the characters. I liked that part of it took place in Alaska. But to me, the story took too long. It's not like it ever got bogged down, it just took too long to get where it was going. So I liked it. Didn't quite REALLY like it. The extra half star is just b/c it's Grisham.
Always good to read some Grisham. A little more editing, and this book would have been great.

2.5 stars. Could be 3 but I expect more from John Grisham
Disappointingly slow and predictable with flat, unlikable characters. I thought I had read (and enjoyed) most of Grisham's early works, but clearly I must have missed A Time To Kill as I could not remember it despite the many references to it in This "sequel". Doubt I will read it, as I really disliked Jake. He seemed egotistical, lazy, money-grubbing (but trying to hide it) and stuck in the glory of his past. He didn't deserve to win the case, as it seems that everyone else was doing all the work and yet he felt he was again the star of the show. The characters seemed (uncharacteristically?) one dimensional - Seth's kids had no redeeming value, most lawyers (Lucien a possible exception) just scheming jerks, Lottie the meek housekeeper). Not much courtroom drama - other than the predictable shocking surprises (all of which seemed obvious from early on). And an end that seemed too fair to be realistic. I think the biggest thing I took away from it was a question of how often trials of this sort really play out like this and how it really all is simply a way for lawyers to openly siphon money from estates. Depressing. Overall I was greatly disappointed.

I really enjoyed this book. The story was laid out well, and the characters were developed as well. However, there were a few parts where the story takes a detour and I thought these could have been developed more.
As for the ending it was very powerful, but how it was put into the book was somewhat a stretch. Nevertheless it was good and also provided closure for the characters.
A good read.

It was OK. A very slow moving book, not compelling until the very end. It felt somewhat recycled, the characters, setting and theme all very familiar. Some people like that in an author, I was hoping for something more exciting.
Exactly what you expect from a John Grisham book. I like that I can grab one of his and know what I am going to get.
