I'm a fan. I found it well-written and engaging and while long, the story needed length to develop properly.

One of the best John Grisham books ever!

This book was marketed as a “sequel” to John Grisham’s 1989 legal thriller A Time to Kill which happens to be one of my favorite books ever. (if you haven’t read it or at the very least seen the movie, you’re truly missing out). And yes, this book takes place in the same racist Mississippi town and features several of the same characters, but it carries none of the gripping suspense that the trial of Carl Lee Haley did.

That isn’t to say that this wasn’t a good read. It’s been a while since I dabbled in the legalese that John Grisham includes in his writing, and I forgot just how many characters he creates to tell his stories. These things did seem to bog down the story a bit, and I found myself somewhat bored at times. However, the mystery at the core of the novel, which is why a rich white man would leave his fortune to his black housekeeper and then hire Jake Brigance to make sure it happened, kept me intrigued, and the ending was definitely worth wading through probate court terminology for.

Evidently there are two more novels set in Jake Brigance's orbit, but I’d kind of rather just read A Time to Kill again.

I am still reading this book and feel like it will never end. As several others mentioned, I too find it very boring.

I think I'm officially done with Grisham's books. This book could have easily been a hundred pages shorter and the entire story was so obvious, virtually all the way through. It got 2 stars because I hung in with it, so it avoided the dreaded 1 star. There was nothing of the Grisham of yore and that seems to have been a common theme of the past few years.
